What is Pewter?
Pewter is a metal alloy, or a mixture of different metals, which are combined to make one. It takes at least two metals to make an alloy. Once they are combined, the end product created will have new characteristics such as color, weight, melting points and others. The predominant metal used to make pewter is tin (Sn). High quality pewter will contain at least 92% tin and is made particular to what it will be used for. When copper is added to tin it makes the final product softer and more easily worked into different shapes. Antimony is added to make it bright and nearly free of tarnish. People who work with pewter have specific formulas that they use in accordance to what plans they have for the pewter.
History
Tin can be considered a precious and expensive metal. It's the 4th most precious metal in common usage after platinum, gold and silver. It also has a long-standing history as it has been mined and used to make objects both decorative and functional for over 3000 years! The oldest pewter found by archeologists goes all the way back to 1500 BC in Egypt. It has been used in China for over 2,000 years and in Japan for 1,100 years. Pewter was also used in Europe in the 12th century, where it was “only within the reach of the wealthy, found on the tables of castle halls and in the houses of rich merchants and churchmen”. Later its use became more common and reached into taverns and cottages. It was mainly used for functional items like plates and cutlery, but artisans also made small decorations and toys, and developed their own marks to distinguish their work.
Today
Pewter items today are enjoying an incredible revival. Both consumer and craftsman have rediscovered the glowing beauty and practical function of fine pewter. Pewter jewelry components are the trend as they have the luster and detail of silver, but more economical to manufacture. At Quest Beads, we continue to use only the highest quality pewter. With our talented group of designers, skilled artisans and dedicated staff, our goal is to provide you with new ideas, unique product and unmatched service.
Note
Please be aware that there are manufacturers selling components made of zinc, but promoting them as pewter. Zinc is a harder and lighter metal, which is much cheaper to manufacture. It does not have the natural beauty or intrinsic value that pewter contains.
